Return Home See Xhosa traditional dress
Traditional weddings in South Africa are very different and highly recommended for the ultimate African experience. From traditional ceremony through to traditional foods and drinks, wedding attire and more. South Africans have been referred to as the 'rainbow nation', a title which epitomises the country's cultural diversity. The population of South Africa is one of the most complex and diverse in the world. Of the 45 million South Africans, nearly 31 million are Black, 5 million White, 3 million Coloured and one million Indian.
The Black population is divided into four major ethnic groups, namely Nguni, Sotho, Shangaan-Tsonga and Venda. There are numerous subgroups of which the Zulu and Xhosa (two subgroups of the Nguni) are the largest. There are eleven official languages in South Africa, namely English, Afrikaans, Ndebele, Sepedi, Xhosa, Venda, Tswana, Southern Sotho, Zulu, Swazi and Tsonga. It is our aim to commit to and to promote the cultural weddings that are TRULY cultural from the venue through to the wedding night. We have a very dedicated African team working on these packages and we should be placing them up on the site shortly.
Our aim is to cover a package for every single ethnic group giving our international clients a selection to choose from, working through a team of African energetic ladies who are very keen to give the world a taste of TRUE African hospitality . This team will be able to arrange the venue based on the culture chosen, design and make the wedding dress and any traditional clothing required for the guests, arrange the ceremony as it was thousands of years ago with all the appropriate trimmings. The African team are being overseen by The Travelling Bride consultants but ultimately the business will belong to two of them and we will do all we can in order to help turn their little African dream into reality..
For anyone interested in supporting the wonderful dressmaking skills of Nompi Mabaso and her sister Nokugula Mthinzi as seen in all of the pictures featured here, please do not hesitate to let us know. All clothing made to perfection and can be couriered to your door no matter where you are on the globe. See the Xhosa traditional dress album. More coming soon.
